Fixing a Website Vs Redesigning It

Should I fix my site or just redo the whole thing?

When asking this question it’s important to realize that there’s not just one answer to this question. First you have to ask yourself:

  • How old is my current site design/build?
  • What am I changing?
  • Why am I changing this?
  • Does it add functionality?
  • Am I doing this myself?
  • If not – is it worth the cost?

My rule of thumb is, if the site is over 5 years old, it would be best to do a redesign and rebuild. Whenever going through the process of a redesign, it’s always hard to fit the old content into the new design. It’s a smart idea to review all content and tweak or remove content that is over saturated with keywords or content that is repetitive because one thing Google will definitely punish you for is duplicate content. The main goal of the redesign is to bring the website back to current times; new coding and design practices are born every day.

On the other hand, if you decide you want to fix or add to your site there are some benefits. One main benefit is cost; it will be less money to fix usually (but not always). If the change to your website includes adding big functionality like a login system it might be cheaper to redo the site using a content management system that has readily available and affordable plugins. Fixing the site instead of redoing it can also cause the site to appear like old sections sewn to the new additions in an attempt to bring the website back to life. This is likely to cause an ugly Frankenstein effect; which will make you even more frustrated at this freakish beast that you have now summoned from the afterlife.
